In 1995, the city of Phoenix was awarded the Major League Baseball expansion franchise that became the Arizona Diamondbacks. Jerry Colangelo, the owner of the Phoenix Suns, assembled an ownership group, and lobbied for the franchise. To name the team, the ownership group, known as Arizona Baseball, Inc., sponsored a name-the-team contest. The name "Diamondbacks" was the winning choice, and the person submitting the name won lifetime season tickets to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
