Named after the American Royal Livestock Show, an annual Kansas City event since 1899, the Kansas City Royals were established by Ewing Kauffman when Kansas City was granted a team in the 1971 Major League Baseball expansion. The Athletics were the orginal Kansas City team, but moved to Oakland after the 1967 season, leaving the city without a team for the first time since the 1880's.

The Kansas City Royals have only one World Series Championship, in 1985, and two pennants, 1980 and 1985.
