Widespread Panic, the hard-hitting southern rock force from Athens, Georgia, commonly referred to as a jam band, has the most dedicated fan base similar to, albeit smaller than that of the The Grateful Dead and Phish. Widespread Panic began as a weekly jam session at the Uptown Lounge in 1985 and grew into a six-man musical force that draws huge crowds all over the country.

Panic's debut LP, Space Wrangler, established a small fanbase and was the start of several years of constant touring before the band signed a record deal with Capricorn Records to release their major label debut, Widespread Panic in 1991 . After appearing with the H.O.R.D.E. tours for a few years, the band became one of the most popular new jam bands.

Widespread Panic built a large fanbase without the help of Top 40 Radio or MTV, playing sometimes as many as 150 shows a year and by performing consistently at a high level and becoming master set list creators. You can often attend three consecutive Widespread Panic concerts without hearing the same song twice.

Widespread Panic's first live album, Light Fuse, Get Away, was released in grand Panic style, with a free "CD release party" concert in the streets of hometown Athens, Georgia. It was estimated that more than 100,000 fans descended on the town, making it the largest CD release party in history.

In August 2002, founding guitarist Michael Houser died of pancreatic cancer. George McConnell, a Beanland alumnus and long time bar band hack, joined Widespread Panic in Houser's wake. Houser's wish was that Panic would continue as a band, and at the end of the summer tour, they went back to the studio to record Ball.

After 18 years of non-stop touring, pausing only for studio recording and Christmas vacation, the band began a hiatus in 2004 to spend time with their friends and families. It lasted until March 24, 2005, beginning with three shows at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia.
