Last year's Subway Fresh 500 was an exciting race for Kurt Busch, as he won the race, leading for 219 laps at the Phoenix International Raceway. Busch ended his streak of bad luck crashes, holding off Michael Waltrip to win the NASCAR Nextel Cup race.

Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) was built at the foothills of the Estrella Mountains and was intended to be used for American open wheel racing. In 1988, NASCAR came to Phoenix and made auto racing a major sporting attaction.
Rusty Wallace holds the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series record for the fastest lap at 26.830 seconds or 134.178 mph on November 3, 2000, beating Tony Stewart's 118.132 mph the previous year.
