Pittsburgh joined the NFL in 1933 as the Pirates. Their first game was played against the New York Giants, in which there were creamed 23-2. They struggled through the 1930's never really playing above .500 football. In 1941, the team was renamed to the Pittsburgh Steelers after the city's role in steel-making.
